The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is launched by the European Commission and EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations) in order to accelerate the development of safe and more effective medicines. The IMI is based on the FP6 Integrated Project, InnoMed, which in 2005 received funding from the Framework Programme. Part of this project is the establishment of a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) to address the shortcomings of the current process for medicines development. The SRA presents research needs and the way to address these within its four cornerstones: Safety, Efficacy, Knowledge Management and Education & Training.
The EFB Medicines Development Section is responsible for the Education & Training part. The SRA was developed during the first 6 months of 2005 and was published on the Commission’s website in July 2005 for public hearing. A number of comments and suggestions were received and a revision of the SRA was published on 15 September 2006.
The IMI and the SRA have gathered a lot of attention and similar initiatives are seen elsewhere, e.g. the Critical Path Initiative from the FDA in the US. Numerous meetings have taken place to develop the SRA, to present it and to discuss the vision and content with stakeholders. Now we are awaiting the political process to the establishment of the technology platform to implement the SRA.
